Longmen Grottoes is not about 'looking at stones' but about a thousand years of carving history. Whether you hire a guide makes the experience differ by a factor of two. This article explains why, how to hire one, and the smoothest way through the West and East Hills.
Longmen's value is in the 'stories behind': which Buddha was funded by Wu Zetian's cosmetic powder money, why the Emperor and Empress worshipping Buddha relief from the Middle Binyang Cave is overseas, why the Lotus Cave's dome looks like a starry sky — without asking, your eyes see only caves and statues.

The Vairocana Buddha, the Three Binyang Caves and the Lotus Cave are all on West Hill; allow at least 2 hours. The Fengxian Temple platform is the best spot facing the Buddha.

Cross the flood bridge to the opposite bank; the vantage point for a full West Hill panorama is also here. With limited energy, see only the highlights, no need to walk it all.

On the way, see Xiangshan Temple and the Bai Juyi tomb garden (Bai Garden) at a relaxed pace — a perfect finish. Total about 3–4 hours.
Recommended, yes. Longmen is grotto art; its value is in the history, era and stories behind the statues, and without a guide you easily see only 'stone figures'. An official guide or audio tour makes a big difference in experience.
Three kinds: 1) official scenic-area guide (most authoritative); 2) audio tour / scan-to-listen (free, cheap); 3) third-party guide (flexible, but verify credentials). Choose official for history, audio for freedom.
A serious visit is about 3–4 hours: West Hill caves + cross the bridge to East Hill + Xiangshan Temple + Bai Garden. A quick skim of 1.5 hours is possible but a big loss.
See West Hill first (the Vairocana Buddha, the Three Binyang Caves and other highlights are all on West Hill), cross the flood bridge to East Hill caves, then continue to Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden.
Shoot head-on from the platform of Fengxian Temple for the most frontal view; for a full panorama, frame from before the bridge or looking back at West Hill from East Hill. Morning front-light is friendlier.
The scenic area mixes electric carts and steps; seniors can take fewer steps and more carts, and children should be watched near cliff-side walkways. The core is West Hill + Fengxian Temple.
Ticket prices are subject to official scenic-area ticketing channels and may differ by low/high season; group tours / private small groups usually include tickets, stated in the quote. We don't list fake prices.
Metro Line 2 reaches near 'Longmen Grottoes Station', then a taxi/bus of about 10 minutes, or a direct taxi of about 20–30 minutes. A tour includes round-trip transport.
Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) have comfortable weather and good light; summer needs sun protection and hydration; winter is less crowded but colder. Avoid midday sun and holiday peaks for more comfort.
Put Longmen on a city day and reserve a full day for Laojun Mountain (far in Luanchuan). See the 3-day itinerary: Day 2 Longmen + White Horse Temple, Day 3 Laojun Mountain. Far-trip transport can be outsourced to a private small group. Call 13017648055 (same WeChat number).
A tour / private small group can include Longmen official-guide booking, round-trip transport and tickets, sparing you the queue to book a guide. Independent groups with adjustable itineraries.
